It should go without saying that this is entirely fictitious. I have created unit sizes and strengths based upon real deployed troops in the areas this campaign takes place at the time.
I will not comment on ideology or societal differences between the two combatants of this fictitious war.

THE WAR FOR THE WEST, JUNE - 1985

Der Krieg um den Western is a series of linked missions set during 1985. Players assume the roles of members of 13th Panzergrenadier Company, Panzer Division 3 (PnzDiv3) defending Western Germany from an invasion by both the USSR and the DDR. The situation is bleak, massively outnumbered; the Bundeswher must do their best to hold their ground until Allied reinforcements can come in from France, the United Kingdom and the United States. The NATO plan was to fight a rolling retreat across West Germany, using natural terrain features to slow the Warsaw Pact advance. It is along the Southern border of the BDR and DDR that Panzer Division 3 finds itself. Using the Mittlegebirge as a defensive line.

BACKGROUND

  • February 13th - Korean Airlines flight KA212 suffered a malfunction of it's guidance system and strayed off-course into Russian airspace. Mistaken for a B-52 bomber, Soviet aircraft were scrambled and the passenger jet was destroyed.
  • February 21st - Sanctions are levied against the Soviet Union in response to the fate of the KA212.
  • March 9th - Hardliners within the USSR demand the Premier take a tougher stance against NATO.
  • April 17th - A rogue Soviet jet attacks the USS Cole in the Sea of Japan. The stricken destroyer fires 2 cruise missiles at the base the jet came from.
  • April 18th - Tensions rise and the United States places all forces at maximum readiness. A 30 minute 'firefight' breaks out in Berlin after nervous guards mistake a Russian supply truck as the start of a raid on Checkpoint Charlie.
  • May 2nd - A Soviet submarine runs aground in the Bearing Sea, the Kremlin blames the US Navy. NATO places all fleets on high alert.
  • May 20th - The Russian Premiere dies suddenly, General Gregarin is sworn in as his replacement. All diplomatic channels with the USSR are closed.
  • June 1st - Massive troop activity in the Deutsche Demokratische Republik forces NATO to begin combat preparations. Panzer Division 3 of the Bundeswehr are mobilised to their positions.
  • June 2nd - A 30 minute artillery barrage hammers NATO positions across the front line. The USSR and DDR issue formal declarations of war against the Bundesrepublik. NATO joins West Germany. After 2 hours of combat, Berlin is lost.
  • June 3rd, 12:30 hours - Panzer Division 3 receives first contact from hostile forces.
  • June 3rd, 13:10 hours - Panzer Division 3 is forced to withdraw.
  • June 3rd, 13:25 hours - PRESENT DAY

Report, After Action, B COY, PGR-13, June 3rd

Bravo Company were able to hold back the advancing Warsaw Pact forces in the mountain passes of the Mittlegebirge. With narrow terrain to their advantage, NVA troops were funnelled into killzones within which they could not operate effectively. Suffering relatively low losses, B COY held their ground until the Medical troops had withdrawn from the area. It was during the final retreat that B COY suffered their notable losses, with 2 precious Marders being destroyed, and a squad being cut-off behind enemy lines.
Such losses are to be expected in this ongoing war, and the next engagement is looming.

OPERATION ONE : MISSION SUCCESS
